PhD

Mgr inż. Marek Plata

Graduate of Chemical Technology (Bachelor's degree) and Fuels and Environment (Master's degree). Currently, a Ph.D. student at the Doctoral School of the AGH UST in Krakow. Scientific interests are related to the technology of thermochemical conversion of biomass and various organic by-products into higher value-added bioproducts. This mainly includes the process of hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) and the possibilities of upgrading and subsequently processing the liquid products of this process, such as biocrude, into drop-in fuels. drop-in.

Research topics:

  • Thermochemical conversion processes of biomass (pyrolysis, hydrothermal liquefaction),
  • Brewer's spent grain (BSG), by-products from the food industry (fruit and vegetable pomace)
  • Biomass pretreatment processes (protein extraction, sugar hydrolysis),
  • Catalytic hydrotreating (HDS, HDO, HDN) of liquid products,
  • Gas chromatography (GCMS-FID),
  • Analytical analyses and measurements (EA, HHV, FTIR).

Research projects:

  • Research Investigator in the LIDER XI project of the National Center for Research and Development "Development of a method for sustainable transformation of food processing waste to bio-polyols as a new chemical platform" - LIDER/58/0241/L-11/19/NCBR/2020
  • Principial Investigator in the mini-grant for young scientists and PhD students within "Excellence Initiative – Research University" program "Study of the process of hydrothermal liquefaction of brewer's spent grain (BSG) - catalytic process, and improvement of yield and quality of bio-oil" - AGH/IDUB-D4/6797
  • Research Investigator in the "Excellence Initiative – Research University" grant "Carbonizates obtained from waste biomass thermoconversion as supports for hydroprocessing catalysts" - AGH/IDUB-D4/6261

Mgr inż. Łukasz Korzeniowski

Research interests focus on developing the concept of a biorefinery, which aims to create sustainable technologies integrating various chemical and biochemical processes. The goal is to maximize the quantity and value of products derived from biomass and various types of organic waste.

Research topics:

  • Pre-treatment processes of lignocellulosic biomass,
  • Chemical and thermochemical conversion processes of biomass,
  • Obtaining platform chemicals from biomass (e.g., furfural, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, levulinic acid, sorbitol, xylitol),
  • Valorization of solid bioproducts (biochar, hydrochar) and their use in industrial processes,
  • Catalytic processes in the production of biofuels and biochemicals,
  • Liquid chromatography (HPLC).

Mgr inż. Kamila Zaborowska

As a PhD candidate at the AGH University of Krakow, I specialize in applying catalytic hydrogenation processes to produce biochemicals and biocomponents (such as polyols and green diesel). My doctoral research focuses on innovative methods for transforming renewable feedstocks into valuable chemical products using advanced catalytic techniques.

As a participant in the LIDER project funded by the National Centre for Research and Development (NCBR), I collaborate with a team of experts on developing advanced technologies for converting waste biomass into advanced bioproducts. Additionally, I am involved in the Initiative of Excellence – Research University (IDUB) grant. Participation in these projects allows me to enhance my knowledge and skills in both chemistry and chemical engineering.

Beyond my scientific pursuits, I am an avid sports enthusiast. I regularly practice yoga and maintain a healthy lifestyle. My interests also extend to music and mantrailing, an engaging activity where tracking dogs are used to locate missing persons. Mantrailing is my preferred way to enjoy an outdoor recreation.

Mgr inż. Aleksandra Hudek

I hold a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Technology and a Master's degree in Modern Fuel Technologies from the Faculty of Energy and Fuels at AGH University of Science and Technology. Before entering higher education, I completed my studies at the Chemical School Complex in Krakow, specializing as a chemical technology technician. Currently, I am a Ph.D. student in the Liquid Fuels, Biofuels, and Bioproducts Group, under the supervision of Professor Marek Lewandowski and Doctor Mariusz Wądrzyk.

My interest in biofuels and biocomponents began during my undergraduate studies when I started researching the acid hydrolysis of waste biomass from juice production (carrot pomace) to obtain a stream of monosaccharides as chemical platforms for high-value chemical products. For my master's thesis, I continued this research, focusing on obtaining streams of mono- and disaccharides from the hydrolysis of carrot pomace. I also expanded the work to investigate the valorization of the solid residue from the hydrolysis process, analyzing the impact of different pretreatment methods on the yield and quality of the bio-oil fraction obtained through hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of the solid residue. These studies were conducted under the supervision of Dr inż. Mariusz Wądrzyk, with part of the hydrothermal liquefaction research carried out at the University of Twente in the Sustainable Process Technology Team in the Netherlands, thanks to the hospitality of Professor Wim Brilman.

My current research interests represent a further step in the field of biofuel and biocomponent production. I am investigating methods to intensify the production of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) as a chemical platform from biomass, utilizing biphasic systems with in situ solvent extraction of the product.

In my free time, I enjoy cooking, reading about philosophy (mainly from India, China, Tibet, and Japan), practicing yoga, and knitting. I also love skiing, RPGs and am an animal enthusiast.
